The race for Conference ABC-I
With a 48-46 win over Westbury on Friday, Elmont swept the two-game regular season series with Westbury. That puts Elmont in good position for a shot at the Nassau Conference ABC-I title and a potential No. 1 seed in the Nassau Class A playoffs. Elmont (12-1, 5-1 ABC-I) is now tied with South Side (10-2, 5-1) for first place in the conference, with South Side still having to play Elmont and Westbury one more time each. Class AA rematch?
Last year Uniondale defeated Baldwin on a buzzer-beater in the Nassau Class AA final. Judging from their two regular season meetings this season that have been decided by a total of five points, it appears the teams could be on their way to a county final rematch. Both seem to be the only team that can beat the other.
Uniondale is 11-3 overall and 8-1 in Conference AA-I, Nassau’s top ability-based league, and the Knights’ only league loss was at Baldwin, 60-58, on Tuesday. Baldwin is 12-2, 7-2 with a loss at Uniondale (67-64) and a loss at home vs. Hempstead. Both defeats happened when Baldwin was without starting point guard Donte Howell in December when he was sidelined with an injury. But the Bruins are now on a 10-game win streak.
Moore points
Since Malverne’s DaShawn Moorer scored 56 points in four overtimes against West Hempstead on Dec. 27, the senior has continued to produce offense at a high rate. He’s averaged 22.1 points in his last seven games for the Mules, who are 4-3 in that span. Moorer is among Long Island’s scoring leaders.
