Nassau Top 10
Here's the first edition of the Nassau boys basketball Top 10. All schools located in Nassau are eligible, so private and Catholic schools will be mixed in with public schools in these rankings.
1. Long Island Lutheran (8-2): Achraf Yacoubou had 16 points and eight rebounds Sunday in a 67-41 win over Center Moriches. That victory followed an impressive 74-49 win against St. Anthony's on Wednesday.
2. St. Mary’s (7-4): Opened the CHSAA season Saturday with a 74-63 win over Kellenberg. The Gaels also won the Frtiz Mueller Tournament with a 30-point win over host Manhasset in the final Dec. 26. They have a big game at St. John the Baptist at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
3. Uniondale (5-2): The Knights fell to Brentwood, 49-48, on a shot with 6.8 seconds left on Wednesday after beating Copiague a day earlier at the Brentwood Tournament. Their other loss this season was to St. Mary’s.
4. Chaminade (6-2): Chaminade beat Westbury, 64-60, in the final of the Lt. Frank Haggerty Memorial Tournament on Wednesday. Tom Morgan (20 points) hit two free throws with 11 seconds left to put the Flyers up by two.
5. Westbury (4-2): Westbury’s two losses this season are to Chaminade and St. Mary’s. They have a tough upcoming week in Conference A-I, hosting Elmont at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday and South Side at 6:15 p.m. Thursday.
6. Elmont (7-0): Elmont is unbeaten and beat Conference A-I Port Washington. It begins the meat of the schedule Tuesday at Westbury.
7. South Side (5-2): Leon Taylor and Brett Cohen have South Side off to a good start. They get a chance at Westbury at 6:15 p.m. Thursday.
8. Baldwin (4-2): Point guard Donte Howell, who was out with a knee injury, has returned, which should give Baldwin a boost.
9. Jericho (5-1): Beyond Baldwin, a handful of teams could fill the final two spots. Jericho beat Hewlett, which had a solid non-league season, on Dec. 22, so they take the No. 9 spot for now.
10. Hewlett (5-1): Wins over Malverne, Lynbrook and Valley Stream Central in the non-league season set them up well for the conference season.
