It was Chaminade’s third game in three days and fifth in seven, and now the Flyers were in double OT on their home floor, not looking tired, still looking strong enough to win.

They got big shots from a variety of sources in that second extra four-minute session to pull out an 89-87 victory over Holy Cross Sunday night in the Gary Charles Hoop Classic.

“It’s a real compliment to not the first five but our seven through 17 [players[,” coach Dan Feeney said. “The way those guys practice every day and push these guys, it is legitimately easier to play a game than it is to practice.”

His Flyers had fallen to Holy Cross by 29 last season.

“We might have been underdogs, but we came in thinking we could win today,” said Lucas Dillon, the 15-year-old sophomore guard who scored a career-high 26.

Jake Ellwood made a corner three with 1:23 remaining to give Chaminade (9-3) the lead for good at 82-79.

Payton Wilson, who scored 31 for Holy Cross (5-7), made two free throws. But Mike Wede hit a three, then grabbed a rebound in traffic, got fouled and nailed two free throws for an 87-81 advantage with 27.3 seconds left.

“That’s a tough play and that’s a winning play,” Feeney said of the board work.

Holy Cross' Jahzir Crawford drained a three to cut it to 87-84. But Kyle Dillon, the senior brother of Lucas, converted two free throws at 12.4 seconds left to complete his 21-point night. The Flyers, who were up by 10 in the third, led 89-84. Donovan Medley sank a three to set the final margin.

“They shoot the ball very well,” Knights coach Billy Turnage said. “… And if you make one little mistake, they make you pay for it.”

Amosun Toluwase made one of two free throws for Holy Cross with 0.4 on the clock to tie it at 68-68 and force the first overtime. Lucas Dillon scored nine in the final 2 1/2 minutes of regulation.

“I knew the team had complete trust in me,” he said. “I was playing my best today.”
