This was the kind of matchup that had a little stronger current running through Cold Spring Harbor.

The four-time defending Nassau and Long Island Class D champion Seahawks were feeling the electricity Tuesday, playing an intriguing boys lacrosse power league game at Port Washington, a 2025 Nassau Class A finalist.

“This team is a great team,” Seahawks senior midfielder Rex O’Connor said of the Vikings. “I mean, they were undefeated coming into today. When we play teams like this, we’re just fired up, knowing there’s an ability to show up and show people and prove them wrong.”

They showed a lot in their fourth straight victory. O’Connor scored twice and Villanova commit Matty Kammer made nine saves en route to a 6-2 Nassau I-B decision.

“This was a very good win for us,” coach Dennis Bonn said. “We’re going in the right direction, for sure. We’ve gotten healthy.”

“Our goal every year, and I’m not lying, is to win as many regular-season games as we can,” Bonn added. “Yes, we want to win the county because that’s the first trophy you can get. … We can go 0-16; we’re still going to be the one seed in the D (tournament). So this is why we play in the power league. It gets us better.”

Cold Spring Harbor (5-3) lost its three-year state title streak last year, falling in the state semis.

“Our goal is to end with that state championship around our neck,” O’Connor said.

They played championship-caliber defense against Port Washington (6-1), causing turnovers.

They were without injured senior defenseman Brady Meyer. But sophomore Andrew Bauer stood out in his first varsity start. Kammer excelled, too. Really, the entire unit did.

“The defense was on point, definitely,” Kammer said. “We talked a lot. We communicated well.”

After Harry Eynon gave Port Washington a 1-0 lead, Jake Telesco, Colby Koenigsberger and Dylan Reilly countered with goals.

Then O’Connor scored his two in the second quarter. It was 5-2 at halftime.

Andrew Ioannou scored in the third, beating Max Eynon, Harry’s twin brother, who also excelled with 13 saves. The Seahawks dominated the possession time throughout.

“Our goal is to peak in the middle of May, end of May, early June, as I’m sure everybody else’s goal is as well,” Vikings coach Dan Gill said. “We want to find ourselves back in the county title game and, hopefully, have a better outcome than we did last year.”
