Silber, Ueshiro, Schook leading Sachem E.
Sachem East is shaking up the power structure of Suffolk League I. After missing the playoffs for the past three years, the Flaming Arrows are undefeated thus far (10-0-1, 8-0-1) and sit atop the highly competitive League I standings.
Sachem East shutout perennial powers Ward Melville and Commack and tied defending state champion Brentwood all on the road. "To win on the road is such a confidence builder against a conference opponent," Sachem East coach Matt Stallone said.
Stallone said he realized this year's team was going to be great following the 1-0 win over Commack on Sept. 27.
The Flaming Arrows have allowed just three goals this season thanks to outstanding play from goalkeeper Will Silber. Ansel Ueshiro (seven goals) and captain Nick Schook (five goals, five assists) are leading a balanced Sachem East offense.
Stallone said his junior-laden squad has developed over the past two years and understands the challenges of playing in League I. "With the kids getting experience on varsity, they know what it takes," he said. "They understand the program and the philosophy."
Sachem East's eight league wins almost match its wins from the past two seasons combined (nine) and there are still five games left to play.
Stallone would not say how he plans to play the final regular-season games should the Flaming Arrows secure a top seed in the playoffs.
"I think they want to put themselves in the best opportunity possible," Stallone said. "Maybe get some home games in the playoffs. "Home field is nice to have."
