Candon leads Holy Trinity to title
Pat Candon had four goals and two assists to lead top-seeded Holy Trinity past No. 2 St. John the Baptist, 14-7, Thursday in the CHSAA Class AA boys lacrosse championship game. Nick Olson had two goals and two assists, and Robbie Zecher added three goals for the Titans (12-6). Nick Ferreiro had two goals and one assist and won 13 out of 15 faceoffs in the win.
Tim Nowak and Emmett O'Hara each had two goals for St. John the Baptist.
SOFTBALL
Islip 1, Miller Place 0: Marisa Wilson threw a five-hitter and hit a solo home run with two outs in the top of the seventh to lead No. 5 Islip (13-8) over No. 4 Miller Place (13-7) in the first round of the Suffolk Class A playoffs. Islip visits No. 1 Kings Park in a semifinal Saturday at 2 p.m.
Kings Park 7, East Hampton 0: Lindsay Taylor pitched a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts and hit a two-run homer to lead No. 1 Kings Park (19-2) past No. 8 East Hampton (13-8) in a Class A quarterfinal. Paige Julich went 1-for-3 with a three-run homer.
BASEBALL
Commack 10, Northport 9: Mike Sparacino singled home Pete Leonello in the bottom of the fifth to give No. 8 Commack (17-6) a 10-7 lead over No. 15 Northport in a Suffolk Class AA elimination game. Chris Baltera went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a triple, and Charles Galiano went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Commack hosts No. 11 North Babylon in an elimination game Friday at 4 p.m.
West Islip 8, Half Hollow Hills West 6: Tyler Bell singled in Chris Anderson in the top of the sixth to give West Islip (16-7) a 6-5 lead in a Class AA losers' bracket game against No.9 Hills West. Bell was 4-for-5 with two RBIs, and Rob Pescitelli had two hits, including a two-run homer. It was Pescitelli's third home run of the playoffs. Craig Kelly escaped a bases-loaded, two-out jam in the bottom of the sixth, and Brian Altschuler also got out of bases-loaded situation to earn the save. West Islip will play No. 6 Hauppauge in an elimination game Friday at 4 p.m.
TENNIS
Bay Shore 4, Whitman 3:Steven Masciale defeated Greg Linden in the deciding match at fourth singles, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2, to lead No. 4 Bay Shore (16-2) in the Suffolk quarterfinals. At third doubles, Spencer Vacarro and Eric Ramsay beat Greg Marvin and Eddy Birdsall, 3-6, 6-0, 7-6 (7-4). Bay Shore visits No. 1 Hills East in a semifinal Friday at 4 p.m.
Half Hollow Hills East 7, Commack 0:Chris Hunter defeated David Kim at second singles, 6-2, 6-2, to lead No. 1 Hills East (18-0) past No. 9 Commack in a Suffolk quarterfinal.
Patchogue-Medford 5, Sachem East 2: Martin Carlino and Brandon Wagner defeated Gui Magzianov and Danny Schwartzman at second doubles, 6-2, 7-6 (9-7), to lead No. 6 Patchogue-Medford (16-2) past No. 14 Sachem East in the Suffolk quarterfinals. Patchogue-Medford plays the Ross/Sayville winner Friday at 4:30 p.m.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Massapequa 15, Port Washington 10: Kelsey O'Brien had four goals and two assists, and Maddie Pimental added four goals as No. 2 Massapequa (12-4) defeated No. 3 Port Washington in a Nassau Class A semifinal at Denton Park. Danielle Doherty had two goals and three assists, and Rory Sadoff contributed two goals and two assists for Massapequa, which plays No. 1 Farmingdale in the final Wednesday at Hofstra at 7 p.m.
