Chien helps VSC advance
Daniel Chien defeated Brian Kaufman, 7-6 (7-0), 6-3, in third singles, lifting Valley Stream Central to a 5-2 win over Plainedge in a Nassau Conference IV first-round boys tennis playoff match Friday.
Jason Shen and Brian Sinco beat Josh Stutman and Brennan Davidson, 6-3, 6-4, in third doubles for VSC (13-0), which will host the winner of Bethpage vs. Carey on Tuesday.
BASEBALL
West Islip 2, Smithtown West 1: Chris Anderson scored Jojo Valentine with a single in the bottom of the fifth to give West Islip (10-5) a 2-1 lead in League III. Tyler Bell's two-out single in the bottom of the third scored Joe Watson to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. Anderson struck out eight, walked three and allowed one run in a three-hitter.
Smithtown East 7, East Islip 5: Kenny Anello's two-run double in the seventh inning gave Smithtown East (9-9) a 6-5 lead in League III. Dan Walsh struck out seven in a complete game for the Bulls, who overcame a 5-0 deficit.Southampton 5, Babylon 3: Nick Acquino was 2-for-3 with two homers and four RBIs and Jay Fitch went 2-for-3 with two runs to lead Southampton (4-11) in League VII. Acquino's two-run homer in the top of the seventh gave the Mariners a 5-3 lead. Starter John Donovan allowed two earned runs and struck out five in five innings, and Peter Barnaby pitched two scoreless innings in relief for the win.
Pierson 3, Smithtown Christian 0: Forrest Loesch tossed a three-hitter to lead Pierson-Bridgehampton (8-7) in League VIII. Jake Weingertner scored Colman Vila with a single in the fifth and Michael Keller drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth for Pierson.
Central Islip 4, Harborfields 2: Steven Morales scored the go-ahead run on a two-out triple by Juan Cabrera in the fourth for Central Islip (7-10) in non-league.
Comsewogue 7, Copiague 2: Nick Calamia tossed a two-hitter with no earned runs, Clay Moosmueller had three hits and two runs and T.J. Riccio hit a two-run homer to lead Comsewogue (3-12) in League IV.

Bellmore JFK 9, Valley Stream Central 0:Peter Sherman shot a 1-over-par 37 on the front nine at Eisenhower Blue to lead Bellmore JFK (8-4) in Conference I.
