Carey vs. Mepham a matchup of undefeateds in Nassau II

Two undefeated teams, two prolific quarterbacks. In this case, two plus two equals one — as in one potentially dynamite duel between Carey and Mepham in Nassau II that headlines an odd week. Most games are scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday because of this weekend’s Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur.

Carey (3-0) is led by Dominic Rutigliano, a pocket-style passer who has completed 53 of 90 for 626 yards and eight touchdowns. “We’ve been blessed with great players at that position over the years and we thought Dom had the characteristics to keep that going,” Seahawks coach Mike Stanley said. “It’s a major responsibility and he’s living up to that. He’s got our offense clicking and our receivers are finishing off plays. He’s making some big-time throws.”

So is Michael Proios, who has Mepham off to a 3-0 start. He has completed 46 of 74 passes for 630 yards and seven TDs, and also run for another 100 yards and three scores.

“He’s got good chemistry with our outside guys,” Pirates coach Anthony Cracco said. “He’s good on the rollout and he’s a threat to run or throw when he gets outside the pocket.”

Both teams average more than 30 points a game and put on an exciting show last year, when Carey survived, 36-33, in Week 6. <“Whenever we get a chance to play the upper-echelon teams, it’s a really good test to see where you’re at,” Cracco said. “Last year’s game came down to the final drive. Our kids have looked forward to this one for a long time.”

SUFFOLK I

Connetquot (2-1) at Lindenhurst (3-0)

Wednesday, 6 p.m.

The Bulldogs’ high-powered offense is guided by super-efficient Nick Anzalone (43-for-55, for 641 yards and eight TDs). A prime target is wide receiver Jeremy Ruckert, also a force at linebacker. The Thunderbirds have a big-play quarterback of their own in Dylan McDermott (51-for-74, 650 yards, five TDs). G.Q. Grippo leads Suffolk with 20 receptions.

SUFFOLK II

North Babylon (3-0) at West Islip (3-0)

Thursday, 3 p.m.

Both longtime rivals emphasize the running game. North Babylon’s David Estrella has carried 76 times for 566 yards and eight TDs, while the Lions’ Mike LaDonna has 395 yards on 64 carries with five TDs. West Islip won last year’s game, 24-21.

SUFFOLK IV

Miller Place (3-0) at Babylon (3-0)

Thursday, 4:30 p.m.

It’s a showdown of Panthers. Miller Place rolls with dual-threat quarterback Anthony Seymour (319 yards rushing, 380 yards passing). Babylon, which won last year’s meeting, 29-25, needed a second-half boost from backup QB Justin Vega (two rushing TDs) to rally past Port Jefferson last week. Wide receiver/defensive back Gejuan Booker is a playmaker.

NASSAU I

Hempstead (2-1) at Massapequa (2-1)

Thursday, 4:30 p.m.

Massapequa won a 35-34 thriller last year, and Hempstead missed the playoffs by one game. The Tigers hope to reverse their fortunes behind running backs Tylique Walker and Dawshawn Meadors. The Chiefs feature big-play receivers Owen Glascoe and Garrett Gibbons. Glascoe recovered two fumbles and had an interception in last week’s win over Freeport.

NASSAU III

Roosevelt (2-1) at Wantagh (3-0)

Thursday, 5 p.m.

Defending Long Island champion Wantagh handed the Rough Riders their only two losses last season, 28-0 and 15-0 in the county final. Roosevelt’s best chance to reach the end zone is its latest star running back, Kevon Hall (505 yards, six TDs). The Warriors remain stingy on defense, allowing seven points per game, and can pound with running backs Timmy Rohan and Gavin Casey.
