LI Lutheran falls to Connecticut, 49-43
Connecticut's Hamden Hall scored the go-ahead TD with less than two minutes left to defeat Long Island Lutheran (0-1), 49-43 in its Fairchester Conference opener. Lutheran totaled 482 yards and six touchdowns on the ground, as Tiquan Garner had 219 yards and two TDs on 19 carries. Garner's 33-yard TD run in the fourth quarter gave the Crusaders a 43-35 lead. Brandon Alford had 179 yards and two TDs on 12 carries, and Jordan Channer added two more touchdowns on 32 yards and nine carries. Sophomore Elijah Walters had 10 tackles in first varsity start.
St. Anthony's 41, Monsignor Farrell 26: Dariyan Riley had seven carries for 106 yards and a touchdown and Brian Sherlock had five carries for 59 yards and two touchdowns to lead St. Anthony's (1-0) in CHSFL. Sherlock's first score came on a 1-yard run which capped a 10-play drive late in the second quarter and he scored on a 33-yard run in the third. Anthony Anderson added four carries for 84 yards and a TD for the Friars who had 41 rushes for 401 yards.
St. John the Baptist 14, Bishop Ford 6: St. John the Baptist (1-0) was carried by its defense in its win in CHSFL AA/A. Matt Mocomde had 14 carries for 126 yards and two scores on the day. His 67-yard run helped set up the Cougars' second scoring drive, capped by his four-yard scoring run. Brendan Monahan, Bobby Kretz and Tyler Slack combined for 29 tackles and three sacks.
