Steve Skon was only a sophomore when he directed one of the biggest upsets in Long Island football history. Skon, now a three-year starter for Lindenhurst, quarterbacked the Bulldogs to a 24-21 win over Floyd in a Suffolk Division I semifinal on Nov. 14, 2008.
Skon hit Jon McGibbon for a 19-yard touchdown with 1:06 left to help the Bulldogs erase a four-point deficit and end Floyd's Long Island-record 42-game winning streak.
"It's something you never forget, just a great win," said Skon, who has thrown for 533 yards and eight touchdowns in three games this season.
Skon gets another chance to lead Lindenhurst (2-1) over Floyd (3-0) in a pivotal Suffolk Division I matchup Friday night at 7 o'clock in Mastic Beach. The game, which will be broadcast live on Cablevision iO Ch. 14, pits Floyd's vaunted running game, led by Stacey Bedell, who has rushed for 612 yards and seven touchdowns, against Lindy's air attack.
Here's a look at the rest of the top games this week:
TONIGHT
Comsewogue (2-1) at Newfield (3-0), 7 p.m.:Newfield looks to go 4-0 for the second time in its 53-year history in this Suffolk II game. The Wolverines started 4-0 in 2007 and finished 5-4. Newfield linebacker Ron Denig will be in halfback Vincenzo Masone's face all game. Can Masone and the Warriors move the ball on Denig and linebackers Julian Santiago and Tom Diubaldo?
Hewlett (3-0) at Division (1-2), 7 p.m.: In Nassau III, Hewlett cannot afford to look past low-scoring Division (two touchdowns in its first two games) after a 35-7 win over Lawrence. The Bulldogs meet undefeated Lynbrook next week.
TOMORROW
East Meadow (3-0) at Oceanside (3-0), 4 p.m.: After a win over top-seeded Farmingdale, the Jets find themselves in a battle with undefeated Oceanside for first place in Nassau I. The Sailors last won a conference championship in 1977.
Calhoun (1-2) at Elmont (2-1), 2 p.m.: Loser is still in the Nassau II playoff hunt, but if either wants to be a Big Four champ, a win is necessary.
Sewanhaka (2-1) at Plainedge (2-1),1:30 p.m.:This Nassau III matchup pits Plainedge quarterback Nick Frenger, who has thrown for more than 500 yards and six touchdowns, and Sewanhaka's Brian Wint, who's rushed for 414 yards and three scores.
Half Hollow Hills West (2-1) at East Islip (2-1), 1:30 p.m.: Can East Islip rebound from its startling loss to surprising Newfield in this Suffolk II game? The Wolverines upset the Redmen for the first time in 50 years, 23-7. Does Hills West have too much speed for East Islip?
Sachem North (3-0) at Connetquot (3-0), 1:30 p.m.: The Flaming Arrows are the top-ranked Large Schools team on Long Island. But it's Homecoming Day in Bohemia and the T-Birds will be ready for this Suffolk I game, even if star halfback Mike Pellegrino sits with a severe hip pointer. The Sachem backfield triumvirate of Jesse Scanna, Michael Andreassi and Dalton Crossan is unstoppable.
North Babylon (2-1) at West Babylon (2-1), 1:30 p.m.: How will the Bulldogs respond to the 12-0 loss to Smithtown West in this Suffolk II game? Can backs Adam Amin and Preshod McCoy get untracked against the Eagles?
Glenn (3-0) at Bayport-Blue Point (3-0), 1:30 p.m.: Glenn quarterback Ryan Rielly has rushed for 436 yards on 58 attempts and seven touchdowns, and he's thrown for 236 yards and a score. Rielly isn't a one-man show, but can Glenn beat top-seeded Bayport and quarterback Corey Piccone in this Suffolk IV matchup?
