Losing a record-setting quarterback to graduation would cause some coaches to panic.

That won't be the case for C.W. Post coach Bryan Collins, who filled one of his team's biggest needs Wednesday with the recruitment of Oceanside's Tyler Heuer.

Heuer, who set the Long Island high school single-season record for touchdown passes with 34, signed his letter-of-intent with Post Wednesday.

"He was first-team all-state, first-team All-Long Island . . . We felt he was the best football player in Nassau County," Collins said.

Heuer, who passed for 2,179 yards and ran for 727 yards and nine TDs, will get a chance to step in for departed signal-caller Erik Anderwkavich, who passed for 2,625 yards and ran for 680 yards with 32 total touchdowns.

"We had our sights set on him from the beginning of the season," Collins said. "He ran the same system in high school that we run here."

Quarterback wasn't the only position the Pioneers were looking to shore up. Adding size to the defensive line was also a priority.

St. John the Baptist's Derek McMichael filled that bill. The 6-1, 305-pound defensive tackle could help the Post front seven immediately.

"Derek gives us something we've been missing for a few years, which is great size at the defensive tackle position, which will help us stop the run against teams we compete against in the PSAC," Collins said.

Post finished 7-4 overall and 5-2 in the PSAC.

The Pioneers also added Lynbrook linebackers Brandon Cheney and Conor Daly as well as Bellport's Michael Burton to the secondary.
