Weather delays football action

A football week already unusual because all of the public school games in Nassau and Suffolk were scheduled for Thursday became more chaotic when lightning forced postponement or suspension of many contests.
In Suffolk, 15 of 27 games were played to completion, counting the Eastport-South Manor at Sayville game which was ruled a 43-20 victory for Sayville when lightning struck with 1 minutes, 43 seconds remaining. The remaining games were rescheduled for either Friday, Sunday or Monday.
In Nassau, where the inclement weather struck first, only seven of 27 games were played to completion. The remaining 20 were either suspended or postponed.
Ed Cinelli, executive director of Section XI, the governing body of Suffolk's interscholastic athletics, said: "The schools have the option to play [Friday] or re-schedule the completion of any suspended games. Everything is tentative and we're all working on a schedule. Because of travel considerations and the players having to be home to observe a religious holiday by 6 p.m. , some teams will have to play Sunday."
The Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur starts at sundown tonight and ends tomorrow at sundown.
Here are some of yesterday's scenarios:
The Wantagh-Elmont game was postponed at halftime with Elmont leading 6-0. At Valley Stream Central, the hosts and Long Beach were tied at 21 and will begin play on Sunday at 2 p.m. with the start of the second half. At North Babylon, the Bulldogs led Half Hollow Hills West 35-21 when the game was halted with 4:50 left. It will be continued Friday.
The highly anticipated Lindenhurst at Sachem North game never got started because of lightning and will be played Friday at 2 p.m.
