For the fourth game in a row the Carey Seahawks rolled up at least 30 points and continued to dominate in Nassau Division II. Saturday, they scored an impressive 35-0 victory at Mepham. It was also the Seahawks third shutout of the season.
Led by senior quarterback Kyle Zahradka, the Seahawks had 293 total yards as they improved to 7-0. Defensively, the visitors were clicking on all cylinders as they only allowed the Pirates into the red zone once and that wasn't until late in the fourth quarter and the second string in the game. "Going against a 5-1 team at their place it's always hard to get a win on the road," said Zahradka, who was 12 of 23 with 167 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. "They are a great team and this was an excellent way to get to seven."
Defensively, it was Rob Zorn, John Daddino, Tom Opitz (team high seven tackles) and Jon Fineo who held the Pirates in check. Fineo was playing in his first game of the season and was sporting a huge cast on his right hand. He broke his arm the first week of practice. "It's great to be back and part of the team again," said Fineo, a co-captain. "We are just going to take this win and try to do it again next week and the week after that."
Seahawks coach Mike Stanley added, "Our inside linebackers Daddino and Zorn are hammers inside but I think all eleven were real good today."
The Seahawks scored the first three times they had the ball. On their second play from scrimmage, Zahradka hit Rob Miotto with a 59-yard pass for a 7-0 lead. On the Pirates first play of their next possession, a mishandled snap by quarterback Nick White was recovered by Daddino at the Pirates' 28. Four plays later out of the wildcat formation, Giuliano Bove dashed 17 yards for the score. "That is the first time that has happened to us all season," Pirates coach Anthony Cracco said of the mishandled snap.
"We turned the ball over and got in a hole early and when you try to play catch-up against a team like that, they can make you pay," Cracco added.
The Pirates turned the ball over five times which resulted in 22 points for the Seahawks. Daddino, who wasn't feeling 100 percent, only played defense and took the day off from his offensive duties as a running back. He finished with three tackles, a fumble recovery and an interception.
As the first quarter drew to a close, Zahradka found Marino (5 receptions for 71 yard) in the end zone to put the Seahawks up by 20 as Marino's extra point attempt was blocked by Chris Shevins. Carey would score on their second possession of the second quarter when Bove found the end zone for the second time on the day with an 8-yard run.
The Seahawks put the exclamation point on this one when Rob Zorn scored from 10 yards out in the fourth. Zorn would finish the day with 79 yards on nine carries.
