No more playing second fiddle to South Side. Not after Massapequa beat the defending Class A state champs 4-0 on Sept. 27. Massapequa held a slim 1-0 edge at halftime, but scored three times in the first 15 minutes of the second half to take control. The Chiefs have won seven straight Class AA county titles.

“Our style is to try to possess the ball, control the ball, be patient and look for gaps to put the ball through,” coach Bruce Stegner said. “We tried to make it that they had to do the chasing, and eventually they’re going to get tired of chasing.”

After tying 1-1 with Northport in the season opener, keepers Grace Kraemer, Morgan Roessler and EmmaLee Meyer have combined to shutout opponents in Massapequa’s last five games. But no blanking was more important than South Side.

“That’s a measuring stick for us,” Stegner said. “I think that tells us that we’re at the top of the mix in Nassau, and we feel like we can compete against anybody in the state. Ultimately, out goal is to be state champions, and this shows us that we’re definitely on the path.”
