North Babylon assisting with Kicks for Cancer

For Monday’s game, the North Babylon girls soccer team will be known not as the Bulldogs, but as "Team Scottaline."

In conjunction with the charity fundraiser Kicks for Cancer, which honors former Hauppauge student Courtney Tomkin who passed away from brain cancer at the age of 17 in December of 2008, the North Babylon girl’s soccer team will be rallying behind one of their own.

Kathy Scottaline, the wife of longtime assistant principal and teacher Mike Scottaline, was diagnosed with breast cancer over the summer. In order to raise money for breast cancer foundations, the team has held car washes and sold pink soccer ball donation cards and pink and black “Team Scottaline” T-shirts with all proceeds being donated in the Scottaline’s name.

A ceremony will be held prior to Monday’s 4 p.m. game against Riverhead at North Babylon High School to honor the Scottaline family. Many members of the school’s staff and their families will be in attendance, donning their Scottaline tees, and the team will trade in their traditional blue and white jerseys for numbered pink shirts in support of the Scottaline family and Kicks for Cancer. The game will also be played with a bright pink soccer ball.

“This is going to be more than just a game because its really an outpouring,” North Babylon coach Steve Corrado said. “It just shows what a great community North Babylon is, and how the community rallies around good people and good causes. “
