Roslyn golfer Matthew Hirsch with his father David. Matthew, a freshman, hit a hole-in-one in a golf match on October 12.

The weather conditions weren't optimal, but that didn't do anything to sway the focus of Roslyn's Matthew Hirsch.

The 14-year-old freshman golfer hit a hole-in-one, the first of his career, on the front nine at the Harbor Links Executive Course in Port Washington for the Roslyn JV squad in a match against Herricks on Wednesday.

He used a 9 iron on the 115-yard, ninth hole.

"It was cold and windy and it wasn't the best conditions, but it felt good right away," Hirsch said. "I looked up after I hit it and it looked good."

No one expects to hit a hole-in-one. Hirsch said he was especially surprised since he hadn't been hitting the ball well lately.

"I really just wanted to make solid contact," he said.

As uplifting as the ace was, Hirsch, who shot a 7-over 38, lost the match. It's a fact that didn't sit well with him.

In fact, Hirsch said he tried to put the feat past him as fast as he could.

"It was exciting, but I know it's mostly luck," he said. "In my next match I'm going to concentrate on putting it on the green."

Lowe sizzles at Yellow

Farmingdale's Matt Lowe shot a 6-under 29 and teammate Kyle Brey a 2-under 33 on the front nine at Bethpage Yellow in a win over Division on Tuesday.

Danny Hartmann shot a 1-under 35 on the back nine at Long Island National on Tuesday for Mercy in a win over Hampton Bays. The Baymen didn't go down without a fight, however, as Danny Martel shot 3-under 33.

Ian Lynch shot 1-under 33 at Southampton GC in a win for East Hampton, and Sayville's John Farese shot 1-under 35 in a win over Bellport on Tuesday.

Chiefs ends Dalers' streak

Farmingdale, which was riding a 50-match league winning streak, had been the ruler of Nassau Conference IV golf for several years.

That streak came to an end on Thursday when Billy Schlich shot a 3-over-39 on the front nine of Bethpage Blue and led Massapequa to a 6-3 win over the Dalers and a share of the conference championship.
