Govan leads St. Mary's over SJB

Jessie Govan scored 21 points, including a late jumper in the fourth quarter, to lift St. Mary's to a 67-62 win over St. John the Baptist in a CHSAA boys basketball game Wednesday. Govan, who added eight rebounds, hit the jumper with 22 seconds remaining to give St. Mary's (7-3, 1-0) a 64-62 lead. Devonte Green added 18 points and five blocks and hit two free throws with 10 seconds left for the Gaels.

Shelter Island 61, Smithtown Christian 54: Matt Belt-Capollino scored 21 points to lift Shelter Island (2-4, 2-1) in Suffolk League VIII. Hunter Starzee added 14 points and 14 rebounds. Nathan Mundy scored 13 points in the win.GIRLS BASKETBALL

Herricks 48, New Hyde Park 32: Alison Ricchiuti had 23 points and 11 rebounds to lift Herricks (5-1) in non-league. Erin Rivera added 15 points. Gabriela Tomasini scored a career-high 23 points for New Hyde Park.Hewlett 51, Valley Stream South 31: Samantha DiSalvo had a game-high 24 points and Emily Rodriguez added 12 points to lead Hewlett (3-3) in non-conference.

Miller Place 60, Wyandanch 24: Alex Nealis, Devin Kelly and Milan Hatcher each scored 10 points for Miller Place (4-4) in non-league. Nealis added 10 rebounds.

Newfield 39, Mercy 24: Emily Cazer set career highs with 11 points and eight rebounds for Newfield (2-3) in the Hoop Dreams Invitational consolation game and was named to the all-tournament team. Melissa Duffy had a career-high five assists and four steals for Newfield.
