Roundup: Rachel Paul second at Brown Invitational
Rachel Paul ran 5 kilometers in 17 minutes, 39 seconds to place second in the 5K championship at the Brown Invitational yesterday and lead her Sachem East girls cross country team to a first-place finish. Shannon O'Hehir (19:07) finished 14th, Melanie Notarstesano (19:14) placed 15th and Danielle Vazquez (19:15) took 16th for Sachem East.
Northport, led by Brigid Brennan's fifth-place finish in 18:29.1, took second with 82 points. Victoria D'Amato took eighth (18:57.9) and Anna Corrigan (19:16.2) finished 13th for Northport. Kelsey Margey of Friends Academy won in 17:28.4.
Ward Melville's Caroline O'Hea (18:08.3) and Juliana Marcucci (18:47.8) took first and second in the Varsity II race. Teammate Courtney Williams took sixth (18:58.7).
Miller Place sophomore twins Talia (18:19.9) and Tiana Guevara (18:36.5) took first and second, respectively, in the Varsity I race.
Oyster Bay's Nicole Giannetti was third in 19:22.9, East Hampton's Dana Cebulski (19:24.7) was fourth and Lynbrook's Marissa Bellusci (19:27.4) finished fifth.
BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
SWR wins at Brown. Shoreham-Wading River's John Lee took first in 16:03 in the Varsity I boys race at the Brown Invitational. SWR finished first with 53 points. Dylan McAllister (16:42.3) took ninth for Westhampton, which finished fourth in the Varsity I race.
In other races, Sachem North's Colin Eberhardt (16:09.5) took fourth in the Varsity II race, followed by Sean Ferguson (16:17.4) of St. John the Baptist. Northport's James Dickinson (16:19.4) and Mikey Brannigan (16:19.7) finished seventh and eighth, respectively.
Island Trees first. Lucas Pugliese took first in 18:38 as Island Trees won the 5K race at the Nassau Coaches meet at Bethpage State Park.
DeMatteo wins. Half Hollow Hills' Anthony DeMatteo won the 2.5-mile run in 13:19.3 at the Seiden Memorial Invitational at Van Cortland Park in the Bronx.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Glenn 2, Baldwinsville 1: Melissa Rigo had nine kills and 15 digs to lead Glenn to a 25-21, 13-25, 15-13 win the final of the Horseheads Invitational. Baldwinsville is the defending Class AA state champion.
