Sayville football keeps rolling, stays atop Big 10

1. SAYVILLE FOOTBALL The Sayville football machine rolls on. Junior halfback Ashton Bradley had two touchdown runs of 64 yards and finished with 174 yards rushing as Sayville hammered East Islip, 34-13, in Suffolk III. Senior quarterback Jack Coan ran for two scores and passed for another. The Wisconsin commit has 18 touchdown passes and a Long Island record 115 in his career.
2. ST. ANTHONY’S BOYS SOCCER The Friars followed their scoreless draw against Chaminade with eight straight wins, outscoring their opponents 37-3. They defeated Massapequa, 2-1, on Dom D’Angelo’s second-half header.
3. SACHEM NORTH BOYS VOLLEYBALL The Flaming Arrows emerged as the only undefeated team remaining in Suffolk after winning a five-set thriller over Eastport-South Manor. Sachem North (10-0) has won 47 straight matches against Long Island competition.
4. WARD MELVILLE FIELD HOCKEY The defending Long Island Class A champion finished an undefeated regular season with a 4-1 win over Northport.
5. ST. ANTHONY’S GIRLS SOCCER The Friars defeated Sacred Heart, 3-1, with two goals by Sabrina Cristodero raising her team-leading total to 14.
6. CONNETQUOT GIRLS VOLLEYBALL The Thunderbirds swept Smithtown West and Suffolk AA contender Lindenhurst, bolstering their status as Suffolk’s best team. Mackenzie Cole had 32 digs and Nicole Migliozzi had 54 assists.
7. SHOREHAM-WADING RIVER GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY Katherine Lee won the Championship Race at the Brown Invitational last weekend in 16:45.45, breaking the meet record of 16:52, set by Saratoga Springs’ Nicole Blood in 2003, coach Paul Koretzki said. Alexandra Hays was fifth in 17:53.58. Shoreham-Wading River won the team title, scoring 48 points.
8. ST. ANTHONY’S BOYS CROSS COUNTRY The Friars finished second in the first Varsity race at the Section I Coaches Invitational in Wappingers Falls last weekend. Brendan Dearie was fifth in 16:57.30 and Skip Morrell was seventh in 17:02.30.
9. MASSAPEQUA GIRLS VOLLEYBALL After sweeping Nassau AA contender Long Beach last week, the Chiefs won the Lindenhurst tournament for their fourth tournament win of the year. They are Connetquot’s biggest competition in Class AA.
10. LONG BEACH GIRLS SWIMMING Kristen Romano has qualified for every individual state championship swim event and is part of the 200-yard medley relay with Maggie Aroesty, Joan Cash and Megan Sofield that broke their own year-old school record of 1:41.03 with a 1:39.70 finish against Bellmore-Merrick.
