Smith nails Carey girls' first win of season
Cassie Smith hit a jumper from the foul line at the buzzer to give Carey its first win of the season - a 57-55 victory over visiting Great Neck South in Conference AA-III girls basketball Tuesday. Liz Osowiecki scored 12 of her 17 points in a 25-11 fourth quarter. Eighth-grader Victoria Porcasi had a career-high 16 points for the Seahawks (1-9). Daisy Xu led GNS (2-7) with 21 points.
Elmont 44, Mepham 32: Bria Fisher had 17 points and 12 rebounds for Elmont (8-2), which handed Mepham (9-1) its first loss. Cassandra Chery hit two three-pointers in a 16-5 fourth quarter. Nicole Castaldo led Mepham with 17 points.Southold 39, Mercy 37: Sarah Smith hit an 18-foot jumper as time expired for Southold (5-3) in League VIII. She tied the game at 37 with 30 seconds left on a corner jumper. Smith had 16 points, and Melissa Rogers 10 points and 13 rebounds. Kathy Gehring scored 13 for Mercy (4-3).
BOYS BASKETBALL
Plainview JFK 53, MacArthur 44: Greg Renkel had 20 points and 10 rebounds for Plainview JFK (3-6) in Conference AA-II. Gerard Cunningham led MacArthur (6-2) with 12 points.
Valley Stream North 51, Island Trees 49: C.J. Byron's two free throws with 1:07 left gave VSN (5-2) a 50-49 lead after trailing by seven with 3:00 to play in Conference IV-A. Sean Douglas led VSN with 18 points and nine rebounds. Mike Witteck led Island Trees (3-4) with 22 points.
Whitman 50, Half Hollow Hills East 49: Elijah Flythe hit two free throws with nine seconds left to give Whitman (8-2) a 50-49 lead in League II. Daniel Guardado led Whitman with 14 points. Chris Corso led HHHE (3-7) with 10 points.
Central Islip 49, West Islip 47: Darrell Gilliam's three-point play with 2:45 left gave Central Islip (8-2) a 49-42 lead. James Tucci led West Islip (3-7) with 25 points.Mattituck 82, Mercy 54: Tom Ascher scored 21 points for Mattituck (6-2), which clinched its first playoff berth since 2004, in League VII. Mercy is 0-8.
GYMNASTICS
Bethpage 166.25, Carle Place 130.65: Serena Pergola won the all-around with 34.7, including a 9.3 on floor exercise, for Bethpage (7-2), which set a school scoring record in Conference I.
