There was more than a medal on the line in the fourth-place doubles match at the boys tennis state championships Saturday.
Long Island bragging rights were at stake as well.
Fourth-seeded Conor Mullins and J.P. Paris of Cold Spring Harbor, the Nassau doubles champs, beat No. 5 Jeff Cherkin and Kyle Alper of Half Hollow Hills East, the Suffolk champs, 6-3, 6-2, to secure fourth place and send a message for the Long Island team championship.
Cold Spring Harbor and Hills East are expected to meet in the LI team final for the fourth consecutive season this week. "It's a rivalry on paper but we're friends with the kids on the team," Paris said. "We just knew we could beat them and went in with a confident game plan . . . but there's definitely a lot of pride with that match."
