1. ST. ANTHONY’S FOOTBALL
The Friars have won nine of the past 10 CHSFL championships. They own Long Island’s longest current winning streak at 19. They open the season when they host Farrell Friday night.
2. GARDEN CITY FIELD HOCKEY
The Trojans are led by Alexandra Bruno (Newsday’s 2010 Nassau Player of the Year) and Catherine McTiernan, whose 21 points ranked second in the county. They’re joined by Catherine Dickinson, Tara Mahon, Jenna Fuchs, Victoria Piscopo, Gabrielle Giannone and goalie Laura Fanning. The Trojans outscored opponents 88-7 last year en route to the state final.
3. FLOYD FOOTBALL
All-Long Island halfback Stacey Bedell scored five touchdowns in seven carries and rushed for 265 yards in a 41-7 rout of Lindenhurst. The top-seeded Colonials face a much stiffer test when they host Longwood in Suffolk I on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
4. BRENTWOOD BOYS SOCCER
The defending state Class AA champions graduated 18 and return 13 players. It’s a junior-laden, talented group. They opened the season with a 3-1 win over Bay Shore.
5. ST. ANTHONY’S GIRLS SOCCER
The perennial powerhouse entered the season ranked No. 8 in the country by ESPN Rise. They returned from their road trip to Ohio with a pair of ties, but with a roster filled with D-I talents such as Margo McGinty and Reanna Marino, the Friars are built for a state title.
6. SHOREHAM-WADING RIVER FIELD HOCKEY
The Wildcats, winners of four straight Class B county titles, again is the team to beat. The Wildcats have All-American Debi-Michelle Jantzen (42 points) and All-Long Islander Kaitlyn Taddeo (30) leading a talented group that includes Kristin Torres and Christina Malave.
7. MASSAPEQUA BOYS VOLLEYBALL
The two-time defending Nassau champions opened the conference schedule with an impressive four-set win over Port Washington as Christian Smith tallied 14 assists and two aces.
8. ST. ANTHONY’S BOYS SOCCER
Anthony Lopatowski and Myles Bent lead a talented Friars team that looks to win the CHSAA championship after losing in the finals to Chaminade last season.
9. MASSAPEQUA GIRLS SOCCER
The defending Class AA state champion, seeking its ninth straight county title, kicked off the season Monday with a 3-0 win over Baldwin behind two goals from Rosie DiMartino and a goal and two assists by Taylor Kugler. Emmalee Meyer made seven saves.
10. NORTH SHORE GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
The Vikings are the three-time defending Nassau County overall champs and the reigning state Class A champ. Their top five runners return, including Brianna Nerud, Samantha Nadel and Jessica Donohue. They have what it takes to compete with the big schools for the overall state championship.
