Glenn falls short at state Class B girls volleyball
After a quick start, the Glenn girls volleyball team could not advance past pool play in the state Class B Tournament Saturday at the Glens Falls Civic Center.
They defeated Ravena, 25-11, 25-12, in their opening match. They were then swept by Hendrick Hudson, 25-23, 25-21, to even their pool play record at 2.
Glenn needed to sweep Eden in their final pool match in order to advance to today's final.
Eden took Game 1, 25-21, so coach Kevin Harrington played most of his seniors in their sixth and final game of the tourney. Eden won it, 25-17.
"We would have had to play well to advance," Harrington said. "We needed to play really well with that type of competition. We fell a little bit short of that."
The 10-time defending Long Island champion has made this tourney a yearly ritual. This year, however, Glenn fell just a bit short.
But after an undefeated Long Island campaign in which the Knights did not drop a set, this season cannot be considered a failure.
"I don't think we played as well as we could," Harrington said. "But at the same time, you are playing against top teams that you don't play against often. It's really difficult to prepare for what we were playing up there, based on most of the matches we played during the season."
Mattituck ousted. In its first state tournament appearance, Mattituck went 0-6 in pool play and was eliminated from the Class C competition.
By any measure, this still remains the most successful season in the program's history.
"I'm hoping that this shows girls that it's possible to have success in this sport," coach Frank Massa said. "Maybe it throws some more people our way."
Added Massa: "They have nothing to be ashamed of, and they have plaques no other Mattituck girls have ever received."
