Wantagh girls' run ends in pool play at states
The Wantagh girls volleyball team did not advance past pool play, going 1-5 at the Class A state championships yesterday at the Glens Falls Civic Center.
In their opening match, the Warriors were swept by Burnt Hills, 20-25, 16-25.
According to coach Katie McKeefrey, this early setback did little to discourage her team.
"They actually fought harder," McKeefrey said. "They knew they were at states and that they could beat these teams."
The Warriors reversed the tide in their second match, splitting two sets with Cornwall.
In their final pool play match, they fell to Pittsford Sutherland, 20-25, 15-25, which officially eliminated them.
"The girls played their hearts out," McKeefrey said. "The played their best, and they knew they did all they could."
That extended to the pre-match preparation, as the Warriors turned to some New Age technology.
"They had been scouting the other teams on YouTube for the past week, so they knew what they were going against," McKeefrey said.
Lindenhurst can't advance. In Class AA, Lindenhurst went 3-3 against the combination of Arlington, Webster Schroeder and Baldwinsville, and was unable to advance past pool play.
In Class D, Shelter Island went 1-5 in pool play and did not advance.
