Ward Melville boys fencing on top of Big 10

1. WARD MELVILLE BOYS FENCING: The Patriots defeated Whitman, 19-8, and Newfield, 22-5, to extend their winning streak to 133 straight meets. Danny Solomon (sabre) and Stephen Jackson (foil) both went 3-0 against Whitman.
2. LONG BEACH WRESTLING: The Marines improved to 9-0 and marched into the final round of the Union-Endicott Duals in the state’s unofficial dual meet championship tournament. Two-time defending state champion Jacori Teemer went 5-0 in the two-day event. Long Beach beat Wantagh, 47-24, in the semifinal round.
3. BRENTWOOD BOYS BASKETBALL: Senior guard Michael Almonacy became the school’s all-time leading scorer when he scored 18 points in a 104-48 win over Floyd. He broke the record of 1,380 held by Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak. Teammate Jamel Allen had 20 in the win.
4. LONG ISLAND LUTHERAN GIRLS BASKETBALL: The Crusaders’ only loss came Jan. 2 against Neumann-Goretti (Pa.) as LUHI is poised to compete for the Federation championship again this season. Sarah Mortensen is averaging 17.6 points per game.
5. BAY SHORE GIRLS TRACK: New season, same dominance. The Marauder 4 x 800 team, composed of Caelyn Reilly, Jasmine Reyes, Anna Pirkl and Bridget Kanaley, won at the Hispanic Games at the Armory in Manhattan last weekend in 9:41.58.
6. BALDWIN GIRLS BASKETBALL: Aziah Hudson and Jenna Annecchiarico have led the Bruins with 19 and 15 points per game, respectively. With solid role players such as Lames El Gammal and Kaia Harrison, Baldwin is in the discussion as one of the best teams in Nassau.
7. EAST ISLIP GIRLS BOWLING: Olivia Lopera leads the team with a 216.125 average through 24 games. Lopera, sisters Lyndsay and Melissa Mavrich and Jenny Murphy are all in the top 10 in county averages.
8. HUNTINGTON BOYS TRACK: Huntington has three of the top times in New York State, according to the website milesplit. Kyree Johnson has the top 55-meter (6.56) and 300-meter times (35.30) and Infinite Tucker has the top 55-meter hurdle time (7.50).
9. ST. ANTHONY'S BOYS SWIMMING: The Friars defeated Chaminade, 107.5-72.5, Wednesday and had 14 swimmers post state tournament times in the meet. The defending state runners-up look poised to make another run at a team title.
10. UNIONDALE GIRLS TRACK: Asia Jinks, Brianna McGregor, Ayanna Whittaker and Kristina Cherrington won the sprint medley relay in 4:11.46 at the Hispanic Games. The time broke the previous meet record of 4:21.23 set by Warwick Valley last year and is the second fastest in New York State, according to the website Milesplit.
