Ward Melville boys, girls win LI titles
Ward Melville fencing continued its reign as the boys and girls teams each captured Long Island fencing championships Tuesday at Whitman.
The boys defeated Nassau champion Oyster Bay, 14-9, for their fourth straight Long Island title and seventh in eight years. The Patriots rallied from down 5-4 in the first round. Scott Vaeth went 3-0 in sabre, Michael Shaw was 2-0 in epee, and Jay Petrie IV went 2-0 in foil.
The girls won their ninth championship in a row with a 14-7 win over Great Neck South. Laura Barger and Alexa Rohan each went 3-0, and Alexa Antipas was 2-0 in sabre. Kristen Fischbach and Colleen Scriben each won key foil bouts. Barger, a senior, ends the season 25-0.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Whitman 49, Connetquot 37: Senior Myles Jones scored his 1,000th point on a layup in the second quarter and has 1,008 points. He had 18 points and nine rebounds to lead Whitman (11-3), which shares the League II title with Central Islip.
North Babylon 73, Newfield 63: Oscar Ward scored a season-high 16 points and Devonte Green and Preshod McCoy each added 15 points for North Babylon (6-8) in League III.Islip 54, Kings Park 45: Andrew Oberg had 18 points, 15 rebounds, seven blocks and five assists and John Horowitz had 17 points for Islip (9-3) in League V.
Eastport-South Manor 70, Rocky Point 47: Curtis Smith scored 20 of his game-high 26 points in the first half and had five assists for Eastport-South Manor (6-6) in League V. Nick Gratto had 16 points and Daulton McCarthy had four points with 11 rebounds. The Sharks clinched a playoff berth.
Bayport-Blue Point 61, Mount Sinai 53: Adam Berlin scored 12 of his 17 points in a 22-11 fourth quarter and Gary Farley had 20 points and 16 rebounds to lead Bayport-Blue Point (10-2) in League VI.
Solomon Schechter 59, Portledge 50: Danny Eiber had 23 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter, to lead No. 2 Solomon Schechter (10-3) over No. 3 Portledge in the IPPSAL semifinals. Dan Stecker had 14 points and 11 rebounds. Zach Pilson scored 13 points for Portledge. The Lions will host Waldorf in the final Thursday at 7 p.m.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Whitman 75, Connetquot 18: Senior Alexandra Leftridge had a career-high 30 points and scored her 1,000th career point for Whitman (12-2) in League II. Kelly Bilodeau had 12 points.
Sachem North 54, Central Islip 47: Sophomore Danielle Levine scored a career-high 23 points in addition to eight rebounds and five assists for Sachem North (7-7) in League II. The Flaming Arrows clinched a playoff berth.
Copiague 62, Smithtown West 51: Cypher McCloud had 23 points and 12 rebounds to lead Copiague (9-5) in League III.
Deer Park 47, Hauppauge 36: Andrea Desvignes had 17 points and Nicole Alvarez added 11 points and 11 rebounds as Deer Park (12-0) earned its first undefeated season in League IV, according to coach Mike Gennaro.
Huntington 45, Bellport 38: Jackie Waldron had 21 points and 12 rebounds, Emma Hayes-Hurley had 11 points and Shea Scully nine points and nine assists for Huntington (6-6) in League IV. The Blue Devils clinched a playoff berth.
Amityville 39, Westhampton 36: Raven Price hit two free throws with less than a minute left to give Amityville (5-7) a three-point lead in League VI. Price had 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Waldorf 29, Solomon Schechter 19: Olivia Paone had 10 points to lead No. 2 Waldorf in the IPPSAL semifinals. Victoria Jones scored two points with four assists. Waldorf will face No. 1 Portledge at 5 p.m. Thursday at Solomon Schechter.
Portledge 39, Lawrence Woodmere Academy 15: Alexa Lodenquai scored 13 points to lead Portledge (13-0) in the IPPSAL semifinals. Ceci Mulry and Lisa Dourmashkin each scored eight points.
