Anthony Cirillo went out and put the bow on Rocky Point’s big win.

Cirillo pinned Frank Ragone in 2:32 at 113 pounds to punctuate a 45-26 victory over host Hauppauge on Wednesday night that clinched at least a tie for the Suffolk League V championship. Rocky Point (6-0) will travel to Westhampton Friday night for the League V dual-meet finale.

“We still have to wrestle at Westhampton,” coach Darren Goldstein reminded his wrestlers. “This could be our third league title in a row if we stay focused and do what we’re supposed to do. Three years ago we had a 24-0 record, went out to Westhampton, and lost. We left with a 24-1 record.”

The importance of defeating Hauppauge (5-1) was not lost on Cirillo, who is 30-1 and ranked second in the state.

“It’s not really about what I do in these dual meets,” Cirillo said. “It’s more about guys like Bobby Casazza and William Romero, who keep Hauppauge’s top guys from scoring team points. We have a game plan and those guys save us valuable points.”

Casazza and Romero lost at 126 and 132 to two of Hauppauge’s best, Ben Tepperman and Jake Silverstein. But neither was pinned, saving critical points in a matchup that would have been much closer had Hauppauge not forfeited at 120 and 195 pounds.

“It all fell into place for us,” Goldstein said. “Our coaching staff with Billy Coggins, Anthony Volpe and Anthony Ciolino moved our guys around the lineup to make it work.”

Rocky Point opened a 16-7 lead when C.J. Archer pinned Darren Brophy in 1:10 at 145. Hauppauge’s Chris Mauriello closed the gap when he turned in the night’s most dynamic pin, in 10 seconds at 152, to get Hauppauge within 16-13.

Hauppauge’s 160-pounder, Steven Holder, put his team in position to tie the meet. He led Anthony DeVito 3-1 late in the second period before the Rocky Point wrestler hit a neat reversal with 15 seconds left to tie it at 3. DeVito took the 4-3 lead with an escape early in the third period and countered a last- second takedown for the 6-3 win.

“I came out flat and had to come back,” DeVito said. “He tried to go upper body late in the third period and I pancaked him to his back for the final takedown. This was a big team win.”
