The strength of the Mount Sinai wrestling team lies in the middle to upper weights in the lineup. But the Mustangs got some much-needed help between 113 and 126 pounds and that proved to be the difference in a 44-29 win over Glenn Saturday to capture the Suffolk Division II dual meet title at Bay Shore High School.
It was Mount Sinai’s second straight Division II crown.
“We had three big wins early in the dual,” said Mount Sinai coach Matt Armstrong. “Some of our guys who lost in an earlier dual against Glenn came back and won today. And that keyed the win.”
Mount Sinai sophomore Jack Tyrrell got it started when he edged Chris Boccard, 8-7, at 113 pounds. Boccard had pinned Tyrrell in 5:00 earlier this year. Mustangs sophomore Brendan Goodrich beat Jared Albert, 6-4, in overtime at 120. Albert had defeated Goodrich 4-2, in overtime the first time they wrestled.
And Joe Sabella nipped Brendan Knott, 5-4, at 126 to get Mount Sinai within 19-9. The Mustangs outscored Glenn, 35-10, the rest of the way.
Glenn (6-2) had opened a 19-0 lead and threatened to dethrone the defending champions.
Eighth-grader Anthony Mirando pinned seventh grader Brayden Fahrbach in 45 seconds at 99 pounds to key the early scoring surge. Fahrbach had beaten Mirando, 8-0, earlier this year.

But Mirando caught him in a quarter-Nelson and put to him his back for the first period pin to ignite the huge Glenn crowd.
“Both teams had some big wins and the fans were into it,” Armstrong said. “We responded well when we were down. It was an exciting win for us.”
