The meet is more than a week old, but the shock has not subsided. Massapequa, considered the third- or fourth-best wrestling team in Nassau for much of the season, won the overall Nassau Dual Meet Tournament on Jan. 29.

Long Beach, the pretournament favorite, fell to Plainedge in the quarterfinals. The Marines have six wrestlers who could score at the state meet.

MacArthur, Long Beach's Conference 2A rival, lost to Wantagh in the semis.

Heading into the final, Wantagh was expected to end Massapequa's postseason run. But the Chiefs shocked the wrestling community once more, pulling out a 10-point victory to secure the title.

"This is great for the program," Chiefs coach Joe Catalanotto said. "We've been in three finals and won two championships in a row. We just want to keep improving on our last performance."

And with the state qualifier beginning Feb. 12, Massapequa could raise a few more eyebrows.
