Rangers defenseman Michael Del Zotto could have just been wowed by the Lightning’s Steven Stamkos after Wednesday’s three-point game for Stamkos, the NHL’s leading goal scorer, in Tampa’s win over the Rangers.

But Del Zotto has been seeing it for a long while. He and Stamkos played youth hockey in Markham, Ont., together, and Stamkos was just as good then as he is now.

“He’d get 60 assists a year just by scaring goalies with a fake shot,” Del Zotto said. “He’s always had the quickest release of anyone. Even in the summer just working out, he’s working on getting his shot away. It’s scary.”
