When Peter and Chris Ferraro wanted their hockey careers to take off, they had to take off, too - to places with stiffer competition and more exposure. Places that weren't Long Island. Now that the former New York Rangers are back home, they're hoping the day will come when promising talent can stay put.

The Ferraros, who a year and a half ago founded Jericho's Ferraro Brothers Hockey, are putting a call out to elite young hockey players, from the ages of 15 to 18 to be part of a two-day hockey showcase Aug. 4-5 at Dix Hills Arena.

"It was really hard to leave Long Island to play, but it was necessary to find the competition," Peter Ferraro said. "We had to travel out of Long Island. We wanted to bring it here."

Peter and Chris, twins from Port Jefferson, played together on the Rangers in 1995-96. Peter also played for the Penguins, the Capitals and the Bruins, while Chris had stints with the Oilers, Penguins, Islanders and Capitals.

"We started our careers here and we had to leave Long Island," Peter said. "We want to help these young players share in these experiences. I've played with Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier and Pat LaFontaine . . . and we decided it was time to share those experiences."

The event, which Peter Ferraro said will include training sessions and games in front of scouts, is open to Tier I under-16 players and Tier I and II under-18 players. It costs $500 per head. The deadline for registration is July 15. Players can register through www.ferrarobrothershockey.com.
