Instant signing analysis: Doug Weight returns to Islanders
It was a done deal weeks ago, but now it's really done. Doug Weight returns to captain the Islanders for another season, this one at $850,000 plus bonuses that could send the deal over $1-million.
Weight is not returning to bolster the weak Islanders forward corps, though he actually does do that, if his surgically repaired shoulder is operational. He has 55 points over the last two seasons in just 89 games; the problem, of course, is the 89 games over the last two seasons. Guys don't get healthier at 39 in this league, plain and simple.
But Snow told Katie Strang back in June that he wants Weight more for what he brings to the locker room than the ice; if Weight can be a positive presence (not a stretch) for the young Isles core and chip in the occasional power-play goal, this will have been a good move.
