According to TSN's Bob McKenzie, it's for five years and $19.875-million, a cap hit of $3.975-million per year.

Very reasonable, very smart deal by the Rangers, who lock up Staal for one year of potential unrestricted free agency at an affordable price.

The Rangers are over the $59.4-million salary cap by about $3.6-million, but they are under the "summer" cap of $65.3-million. They have to get under the season cap by the first training-camp cuts; with all the extra NHL-experienced bodies they have coming to camp, trades are certainly possible, along with the now-accepted notion that Wade Redden will go to Hartford as soon as humanly possible.

With camp starting on Friday, the Rangers have everybody in that they want in. We'll see where it goes from there.
