Ever since Doug Weight began his career as an Islander two seasons ago, he's had a nagging shoulder problem in the back of his mind.

Things got progressively worse last season until Weight decided to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff and labrum in March.

Weight said he's so relieved he finally took care of the injury and is so less mentally drained as a result.

"It's just so nice to come into camp not feeling behind the eight-ball," Weight said after this morning's practice.

Weight has shown no hesitation in engaging in one-on-one battles upon his return. Yesterday he barreled into defenseman Calvin de Haan and sent him flying to the ice. And the strangest thing happened. He didn't even think twice about it.

Weight said he was sore after practice yesterday, but that's only to be expected after such a lengthy rehabilitation.

Weight said he can also tell a difference with the strength of his show not as well.

"Yeah, I was talking with Ricky [DiPietro] about that today, and he said he can even tell I've got more  behind it."
