Scott Gordon talks first day and other quick hits from Group 2
--Scott Gordon said he was glad to see goaltender Rick DIPietro out on the ice for the first day of camp, something that hasn't happened the previous two seasons.
Although DiPietro is healthy, Gordon said the team is going to craft his schedule day-by-day depending on how the 28-ear-old netminder feels. "We can't treat him like a 22-year old."
--Gordon also said for one of the organization's top defensive prospects--Travis Hamonic or Calvin de Haan--to make the team, they'll have to prove they belong in the top 4.
Gordon doesn't want to stunt their development by having them play 6th defenseman minutes when they could be logging top-pair minutes somewhere else.
--Speaking of de Haan, he tested out his shoulder for the first time during this week's rookie games since undergoing season-ending surgery this past winter. He said it was a huge relief to get that first live-game contact out of the way and have such good results.
"I took a couple hard hits and tried to dish it out too," de Haan said. "I felt strong, the shoulder was awesome."
--Defenseman Dylan Reese spent his summer in Carson, California training hard with the likes of Richard Park and other NHL vets. Has been working out there for six years now and loves the relaxed lifestyle as a way to recharge the batteries after a long season.
--You know it's been a long summer when you almost forget what a tremendous skater Jack Hillen is...wow.
