Ullstrom adjusting to smaller ice, trying to prove himself defensively
Although 6-3 Swedish center David Ullstrom has played on a smaller ice surface before, last night was one of his first chances this season to work on adapting his game to the North American style of play.
Ullstrom, who picked up an assist on Nino Niederreiter's second-period goal last night, said he's still learning but feels like he's making significant progress.
"Last night was my first game back here this year, and I feel like it's getting better and better for me. The more I play the easier it will be to get used to it."
Ullstrom, who the Islanders selected in the fourth round of the 2008 draft, said the most difficult adjustment he has had to make is with the breakouts.
"The neutral zone is just smaller and you don't have the same time and space," he said. "I just need to get quicker."
When asked how he'd assess last night's performance, Ullstrom, 21, cited some positives as well as some areas he'd like to improve.
"Defensively, I was pretty satisfied. Offensively, I'd like to create more."
Ullstrom, who has spent the past two seasons in the Swedish Elite League, said he'll try to generate more chances tonight, but his defense will also remain a top priority.
"Everybody has said I'm bad defensively my whole life, so I have to prove I'm really a two-way center," he said. "I not only want to create chances offensively and get some good draws, but I also want to be good in my own end and show that I'm both reliable and responsible."
