Mike Komisarek and the Leafs are a healthy, happy bunch

 Komisarek, from West Islip, had a miserable first season in Toronto. He was limited to 34 games before a shoulder injury sidelined him just after New Year's. He tried to put off surgery so he could represent the U.S. in the Olympics, but ultimately opted to have his shoulder repaired by Dr. James Andrews in time to play this season.

He is playing -- not a ton, averaging just over 13 minutes a night for the 3-0 Leafs; Dion Phaneuf and Francois Beauchemin are well over 22 a night -- and the Leafs are winning. That's enough to put a smile on his face.

"Everyone really is meshing well. We're not letting the details slip," Komisarek said this morning after the Leafs skated at MSG. They face the Rangers tonight. "Last year was rough, to say the least."

Komisarek said he could have put the surgery off until the offseason and gone to Vancouver, but he said that he couldn't face up to missing part of this season with the 4-6 month recovery time.

"This team made a long-term commitment to me and I felt it was the right thing to get the surgery done," he said. Komisarek signed a five-year, $22.5-million free-agent contract last summer, jumping from the Canadiens to Toronto. "Obviously, it was devastating not be able to represent my country, to sit and watch the Olympics, watch the end of our season. But I feel great and we're playing well to start. That's a good trade-off in my mind."
