As of noon today, Souray cleared reentry waivers and is still an Oiler. The Rangers considered claiming the veteran defenseman who has spent the whole season with Hershey of the AHL but did not make a claim, deciding to steer clear of the $2.7-million salary cap hit for next season, when Souray will be 35.

So Souray, who was banished from the Oilers last summer, is still with the club and now back on the salary cap. What's next? The Oilers will likely put Souray back on waivers before Monday's trade deadline to see if anyone will bite again, which is doubtful.

He'll likely be bought out by Edmonton in June, but the Rangers will have better options to fill a veteran defenseman slot then.
