The Rangers just announced that Redden is going on waivers at noon today. If (well, when) he clears, in 48 hours, Redden will either report to Connecticut's training camp or choose another option -- Europe, retirement or something else. Rangers president Glen Sather just spoke with us at the MSG Training Center about it.

"You have to do what's right for the team. That's really what it got down to in the end," Sather said. "We wanted a situation where the young players are going to have the opportunity, it was a fresh start for these guys and we might as well get it done. No sense prolonging it."

Redden, 33, never got settled in after signing a six-year, $39-million contract in July of 2008. The big salary and his inability to be what Sather had signed him for -- power-play quarterback, leader -- made him a target of Ranger fans and, eventually, John Tortorella, who had a heated encounter with Redden when the coach benched him in December of last season.

"He seemed like he was carrying the world on his shoulders," Sather said. "He was really not very relaxed."
