Somehow, it just didn't seem like the Battle of the Hudson without Martin Brodeur.
Brodeur, whose record against the Rangers is 43-23-20, including eight shutouts, was struck in the right elbow with a shot by the Blackhawks' Patrick Kane on Wednesday night, and at the start of Friday's morning skate, the NHL's all-time wins leader expected to play. But he felt a sharp pain in the elbow while he tried to swipe at a puck.
Brodeur said it was painful to hold his stick, and Devils' backup Johan Hedberg was tabbed to start his third game of the season Friday night.
Hedberg, 37, who was signed as a free agent last summer, had been very effective against the Rangers in his career. He was 11-4-2 with a 2.12 career GAA, mainly during his four years with Atlanta, although the Swede also played in Pittsburgh, Dallas and Vancouver.
Callahan out
Ryan Callahan, who slid helmet-first into the boards after a push from the Flyers' Kimmo Timonen in the first period on Thursday, had a sore neck and was scratched for the first time this season.
"I think his stick got caught," coach John Tortorella said. "He's not that type of player; he definitely bailed out and Cally went in head-first. I don't think he meant to shove him. I think it was just a way to get out of the way."
Boogaard to be honored
Derek Boogaard is one of eight current or former New York athletes to be honored Monday at the Starlight Children's Foundation's 21st Annual Celebrity Sports Auction at Madison Square Garden, which raises money for programs for more than 275,000 seriously ill children and their families in the tri-state area.
