The Rangers on Sunday announced they have signed forward Jimmy Vesey to a contract after the 29-year-old earned a roster spot off a professional tryout. The team also placed forward Julien Gauthier and defenseman Jarred Tinordi on waivers, effectively setting the Opening Night roster.

Vesey will begin his second tour of duty with the Rangers after playing for the Blueshirts from 2016 to 2019. In the preseason, he played in five of the Rangers’ six games, scoring a goal with two assists. He scored a power-play goal in the first preseason game and had two assists in the second.

By placing Gauthier on waivers and not Dryden Hunt, it means that, barring a trade, the Rangers will start the season with the maximum 23 players on the roster. Official NHL rosters are due Monday, and players who must clear waivers in order to be sent down to the minor leagues needed to be placed on waivers by noon Sunday. The Rangers currently have 24 players on the roster, including defenseman Matt Bartkowski, who is on a professional tryout.
