Soviets beat Rangers
The Soviet Red Army team went 2-1-1 against the Rangers, Montreal Canadiens, Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers in the Super Series. The series opened at Madison Square Garden, where 17,500 fans saw the Red Army defeat the Rangers, 7-3. Vladimir Petrov scored two goals and had two assists for the Red Army. Steve Vickers, Rod Gilbert and Phil Esposito scored for the Rangers. Vladislav Tretiak made 38 saves for the Red Army and John Davidson made 22 saves for the Rangers.
