ATLANTA---As the buzzer sounded to end the second period, Andrew Ladd responded to Sean Avery check with a slash that connected. No call was made. Avery turned to the referees to plead his case, but was snubbed, he said.
“I don’t know,” Avery said afterward. “They told me to (bleep) off. That’s always their response. They tell me to go (screw) myself.” When it was suggested that he report the incidents to the NHLPA, he shrugged. When a reporter wondered if that would make his position worse, he asked: “Could it get any worse?”
When asked about the incident, coach John Tortorella said: “It wasn’t a penalty.”

Marian Gaborik, who had five shots and played one of his better games in the past month, is 0-2 on penalty shots this season and 2 for seven in his career. Both he and Marc Staal saw the improvement on the power play (1 for 3, with seven shots) after two days of practice. “Got a goal, there was better puck movement, a little more rebounds,” Staal said. “Hopefully that will win us some games”
