Rangers acquire D Steve Eminger from Ducks for Aaron Voros

 Also going to Anaheim is minor-league forward Ryan Hillier.

Eminger, 26, had four goals and 12 assists in 63 games for the Ducks last season. He's a 2002 first-round pick (12th overall) who has played for the Caps, Flyers, Lightning and Panthers, a true sixth/seventh D-man type who is a steady, un-flashy type.

Voros had some fan-favorite moments as a Ranger, but ultimately, the three-year, $3-million deal Glen Sather signed Voros to in the summer of 2008 was not a great move. Voros had five goals in his first eight games as a Ranger in 2008-09, but found his way to being a healthy scratch under both Tom Renney and then John Tortorella.

His greatest asset was his personality -- Voros is tight with Henrik Lundqvist, Sean Avery and Marian Gaborik, three very different guys, and he never gave his coaches any trouble -- but that's not enough with a $1-million cap hit.

Eminger has a year left on his deal, with a $1.125-million cap charge, so that's a wash, essentially. Still room to get Marc Staal signed.

Eminger is not destined to be a star of the Rangers defense, but he gives them another steadying influence, a young veteran who can help with the even-younger core of defensemen.

And it's one more able body to push Wade Redden for a job in the fall.

Hillier, 22, finished last season with the Wolf Pack after spending most of his two pro seasons with Charlotte in the ECHL. He was the Rangers' third-round pick in 2006.
