Rangers forward Sean Avery was arrested early Friday morning for shoving a Los Angeles police officer outside Avery's Hollywood home, according to an LAPD spokesman.
Avery, 31, was held at the Hollywood police station overnight for battery on a peace officer and released on $20,000 bond at about 8 a.m. local time, according to police. He is due in court Sept. 2.
The misdemeanor charge carries a punishment of up to a year in prison and/or a $2,000 fine.
According to reports, police came to Avery's home at about 1 a.m. local time to quiet down a loud party, and Avery shoved an officer and slammed his door on police.
"We will discuss the matter with Sean and have no further comment at this time," Rangers vice president of public relations John Rosasco said in a text message to Newsday.
Avery has one season remaining on his four-year, $15.5-million contract. A call to his agent was not returned.
Avery was suspended six games for using a vulgar term to describe a former girlfriend while with the Dallas Stars in 2008. Dallas released Avery and he returned to the Rangers, for whom he's played the bulk of the last five seasons.
Avery scored three goals in 78 games for the Rangers last season. His 174 penalty minutes ranked eighth in the NHL.
