Derek Stepan, who has been sidelined with a broken fibula since training camp, began skating a few days ago, Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said Saturday.

Stepan is on long-term injured reserve and is eligible to return Nov. 3 when the Rangers host the Blues.

The loss of the team's top center has forced Vigneault to constantly shuffle the lineup during the first month of the season. Stepan also has been missed on the slumping power play.

It is unclear when Stepan, who was second on the team in points last season with 57, will return to practice.

Touching tribute

In an emotional pregame tribute to the two soldiers killed in attacks Wednesday in Ottawa and Quebec, Canadian home teams shared a coordinated moment of silence.

In Montreal, starters for both the Rangers and Canadiens stood with their heads bowed, followed by the two national anthems, with the video board showing the crowd in Ottawa singing along with the same tribute that was taking place in Toronto.

Sitting this one out

Left wing Ryan Malone and defenseman Michael Kostka were healthy scratches. Malone, who was signed to a one-year contract in September, is pointless in four games. Kostka has not played in the last four.
