As previously explained, the Rangers decided that they need to concentrate their money on signing their restricted free agents: Ryan McDonagh, Derek Stepan, Carl Hagelin, maybe Mats Zuccarello and Justin Falk.

The top free agents, in a market that drops off quickly, are all getting long-term deals that the Rangers cannot afford this season. Next year is perhaps a different story, when Brad Richards comes off the books and the cap rises.

After prospect camp concluded in Greenburgh, Alain Vigneault told us:

“Today in free agency we'll be looking to add some depth to our team, but I'm getting the sense from (our scouts and front office) that we have a lot of good young players that need an opportunity to show what they can do.”

The Red Wings were active, landing Ottawa captain Daniel Alfredsson and Panthers C Stephen Weiss, and definitely improved. They're in the East this year, of course.

And Columbus, in the Rangers division, signed Nathan Horton to a seven-year deal.

Washington, which lost Mike Ribiero to Phoenix, has been quiet.  Carolina added Anton Khudobin as a backup goaltender and D Mike Komisarek.
