Ryan Malone scored in the ninth round of the shootout as the Rangers beat the Blackhawks, 3-2, Friday night at Madison Square Garden.
Malone, coming off a hip flexor injury, redirected a pass from J.T. Miller with 4:28 left in the third period to forge a 2-2 tie.
The Blackhawks scored twice in 2:20 late in the second period to overcome a 1-0 deficit after a goal by the Rangers' Martin St. Louis.
Henrik Lundqvist made eight saves in the shootout.
After a scoreless first period, St. Louis broke the ice on a four-on-four, redirecting Matt Hunwick's slapper from the left point past Corey Crawford for his first goal of the preseason at 5:02 of the second.
Rick Nash was denied by Crawford on a two-on-one with Anthony Duclair, and on Chicago's fifth power play, seven seconds after St. Louis was whistled for tripping, the Blackhawks cashed in on Patrick Kane's slapper from above the left circle. It was their first goal with the man advantage (1-for-22) in the preseason.
The Blackhawks took the lead on a terrific sequence. Nash fell in the neutral zone and Duclair was caught as well, and Chicago went up 2-1 on cross-ice passes from Brandon Saad to Kane to Andrew Shaw in front at 16:25.
The first period sped by with very few stoppages. The Rangers dominated early, outshooting Chicago 5-0, but when Nash was called for holding a Blackhawks' stick at 6:15, the visitors spent the entire power play in the Blueshirts' zone.
Agitator Dan Carcillo, who played for the Rangers in the second half of last season, was brought into the Blackhawks' camp Friday and dropped the gloves with Tanner Glass at 2:57. After absorbing a few rights, Carcillo went off for repairs and later returned.
Rangers coach Alain Vigneault watched from the press box. The Blueshirts conclude their preseason schedule in New Jersey against the Devils Saturday night.
