Even though I have my hockey writer hat on these days, I still am our sports media columnist (technically), so I believe it is in my jurisdiction to make this point:

John Tortorella's playoff non-interviews have gone from amusing shtick to annoying and unprofessional.

Yes, yes, I know. Fans don't care about how coaches and players treat the media, even though journalists are there to represent them and much of the fodder for following one's favorite team is generated by the coverage from media members.

It's all just so unnecessary, John.

And please spare me the comparisons with the closest thing to Tortorella in another successful coach from a major market pro team: Bill Belichick.

True, Bill won't go near strategic or injury questions, but he often answers more general questions at length. I asked him one about Bill Parcells on national television two days before the Super Bowl and got an expansive response.

In fact, here is the entire transcript of Belichick's last pre-Super Bowl news conference. It's difficult to imagine Tortorella treating an off-day presser the day before Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals this way.
