A night that started with promise ended in disaster for the Flyers.

Instead of taking command of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series, they dropped a tense 1-0 decision to feisty Buffalo last night at the HSBC Arena, and, in the process, lost the services of their leading scorer, Jeff Carter.

In addition, captain Mike Richards may face a suspension after being assessed a five-minute penalty for elbowing Patrick Kaleta in the head late in the second period.

Jason Pominville scored midway through the first period and Ryan Miller notched his second shutout in the series, which is tied at two games apiece. Game 5 is tomorrow at the Wells Fargo Center.

Highlighting Miller's 30-save night was a sensational save on former teammate Danny Briere with 8:50 left.

Penguins 3, Lightning 2: James Neal scored 3:38 into the second overtime to give visiting Pittsburgh the victory. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 29 shots -- 12 of them in the extra periods -- to help the Penguins take a commanding 3-1 lead. Game 5 is Saturday in Pittsburgh, with the Lightning needing a victory to keep their turnaround season alive.

Neal gathered a loose puck along the boards and sent the winning shot past goalie Dwayne Roloson, who had 50 saves for Tampa Bay. Martin St. Louis scored late in the second period and Sean Bergenheim added his first career playoff goal with less than four minutes remaining in regulation as Tampa Bay rallied.

Ducks 6, Predators 3: Corey Perry's shorthanded goal at 1:17 of the third period put visiting Anaheim ahead to stay and the Ducks went on to tie the first-round Western series 2-2. Game 5 is tomorrow night in Anaheim, with Ducks forward Bobby Ryan set to return from a two-game suspension. -- AP
